Thanks Yvonne!!

DAO has recently started to collect new products from it's members and consolidating all of the information onto one simple spreadsheet.  However, it is always a pleasure to have a student give valuable information that we can all benefit from.  Yvonne recently went to a showroom in Las Vegas that had over 150 exhibitors and was kind enough to share.  Below is the link with all of the vendors that will be helpful with finding materials and finishes!  This link provides the webiste, email address, and phone number for ease of  contact in case you would like to order samples.  Enjoy!

SO MANY EVENTS...SO LITTLE TIME

As we all know the end of the quarter is slowly, but surely approaching. What does that mean? It's about time to lose sleep, pull your hair out, and say goodbye to your social life. But before we do that, let's add some more to your schedule! Previously, we discussed the importance of networking by attending local events. Well here is your chance! ASID, IIDA, and USGBC are having some major events coming up to wrap up the end of the year. These events are a good opportunity to get your face out in the public eye, especially for those of us who are about the graduate and need jobs. Below are some events and links if you need more information. Remember that this list will continue to grow and be updated.

Habitat for Humanity
Suzie Q Blitz Build (October 23 - 30 2010): In January 08, Suzanne Hastings (wife of a Habitat for Humanity crew leader) lost her battle with breast cancer at the age of 36. To honor Suzie’s devotion to community and family, Habitat Hillsborough created the “Suzie Q Blitz Build” – in which a house is built in just 7 days. Part of your donation to the Suzie Q build benefits Moffitt Cancer Center. Together, we can build houses and hope for the cure.

A $20 registration fee includes a t-shirt and lunch. Or you can simply donate.

Insert <"Suggestion"> Here

DAO wants to hear from ….yes…YOU! As much as the leaders love to plan events, fundraisers, meetings, etc. we want to know what our members have to say. As a result, DAO has come up with a way to get your voice heard….DAO Suggestion forms! These forms have been developed in order for everyone to participate, be honest, and be anonymous. Forms will be left on the DAO table, in the office, or you can simply stop one of the President Leaders and get one. It is simple, easy to fill out, and only takes just a second of your time! No matter if you are an introvert or an extrovert ….suggestions forms are the perfect solution to all different types of personalities.

Currently we are working on a box to have these suggestions placed, but DAO wants to spice things up with a “Suggestion Box” decorating contest! We could work in teams or individually, but come together and think of a creative way to design the Department DAO Suggestion Box. What do you guys think of that? What kind of prizes would make you want to participate? WE ARE ALL EARS!!! Details are soon to follow in the next DAO meeting!

Pecha Kucha huh?

A whopping 4 people showed up for the Baseball DAO social this weekend.  Why didn't you go? In the last DAO meeting everyone seems pretty excited about participating in this event.  Everyone asked questions and contributed in the decision making process.  However, where did we go wrong?  We want to have these events as a way for all of us to get to know each other and welcome our new members.  Was it advertised enough?  Please let us know what we could have done better to make this event a success.
On a better note, there is a great networking opportunity coming up this Friday, August 27th in Tampa!  The event is called "Pecha Kucha," pronounced ("peh chak cha"), which is Japanese for "chit-chat."  There will designers, advocates, and overall creative passionate people who have 20 seconds to show 20 slides each.  There will also be other things to enjoy such as open mike, happy hour, and forum for new ideas.
This event has spread over 300 cities around the world, but first originated in Japan by an architect named Klein Dytham.  So all of you who want to network for your own good or have to attend a "professional interaction event"...this is for you!
The event will be held at Mise En Place, in the LaFayette Room, at 442 W. Kennedy Blvd.  Be sure to get there within good time!  Doors open at 7pm and presentations begin at 8pm.  Come out and support your Tampa Bay design community!

DAO has finally upgraded their form of communication and attempting to join the social world online. Yes, we are creating a face book page. The face book will be used for quick comments, questions, or details for upcoming events. Once this page is created there will no longer be minutes that will be sent out, due to the details on face book. As a result, everyone will have the ability to choose whether or not they want to see the minutes and get involved. I think this will be a great opportunity for all of us because we are always on the go and everyone always finds the time to check their face book. What do you guys think? Will the face book page benefit DAO? What types of information would you like to see?

Now don’t fear the blog will still be here and in full affect. Primarily this blog with be used for longer discussions and writing purposes because we want to know what you guys want to talk about.

Come one, Come all….The Social is here!

“….But why should I care??”

For all of us that have been attending and keeping up with our meetings, know that we have a quarterly social among the Interior Design Students. As decided last meeting, our social will be on Sunday, August 22 in the early afternoon...details to follow =) We are all very excited about this social because we all worked together to come to a mutual agreement, adjusted the day and time, and decided to attend a Minor League Baseball Game! So who is ready??

Why should you attend? A few things come to mind that express why attending socials are important:

1. Promotes other students to join DAO

2. Promotes yourself and your commitment to DAO

3. Gives the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends with common interests

4. Provides networking abilities between students, faculty, and potentially professionals

5. A Stress Reliever

6. Illustrates your school spirit and camaraderie

7. Enables you to use your time management skills, regarding homework, family, and friends

8. You get to explore your physical, creative, social, and career interests with like-minded people

9. You become more responsible and well-rounded

10. Ability to learn new things

11. Develops lifelong working habits

12. You become part of a team with a common goal

13. A great way for you to find yourself or your niche

14. Ability to have face to face contact because activity online can become impersonal

Take all of these items and really consider what they mean. Hopefully, when you receive details for the social you can come out and join us! You will have a great time getting to know you fellow peers who all want to come together and have a good time!
